"Power Struggle" Pyrography 16x24" Collection of the artist In Chinese culture, the tiger is the guarding god of the ancient religion. It is considered the most powerful animal except for the dragon,an imaginary and mythical animal. The original art work that is the basis for this image is done by wood burning (pyrography). The message implied in this animated scene is that if you want to be the best, you have to do your best and relentlessly pursue the goal.

The original poem I have written in Chinese characters on the painting can be translated this way, moving down the page and from right to left:
"Power Struggle"
Two male tigers Are fighting for dominance, Showing forceful strength By every known means.
The unearthly power Of the raging roar of these beasts Is shaking the ground And rattling the mountains.
The endless echo Of the fierce howl of these creatures Is reverberating in the canyon And rolling down the valleys.
by Lily Van Dyck *Thanks to my friend Neil Graves for suggestions about English translations of my Chinese verses.
"Beauty and Beast" Pyrography 12x16" Private collection When I finished this painting and showed to a girl friend, she said:"Wow, great! A beauty playing the flue can make a tiger listen; we should try this on men." In fact, my original thought is that the world is magnificent, no matter whether human being or animal, we can all share this space together. Back to top Back to Gallery
